Blue Tomato was founded as a snowboard school in 1988, by the European Snowboard Champion Gerfried Schuller. In 1994 he went on to open the first Blue Tomato brick and mortar store in Schladming. Schuller soon realized that there was great potential in online shopping and launched the first version of in 1997.

The brand has been growing and developing steadily over the years and is currently one of Europe’s largest online board sports retailers. Blue Tomato carries an extensive range of sports equipment, specialized on four sports; snowboard, freeski, skate and surf. On offer is a wide selection of everything from sports equipment such as snowboards, freeskis, skateboards and surfboards, to an extensive range of snowwear, streetwear and shoes. The product range covers over 400,000 items from over 650 renowned brands such as Burton, Volcom, Roxy, Nikita and Nike, alongside newer up-and-coming brands like Sitka, Humör, Somewear, HUF, Brixton and many more. The website is available in 14 languages and Blue Tomato ship to customers worldwide. Blue Tomato currently has over 300,000 fans on Facebook, a number which is growing significantly every day.

Blue Tomato has built up a large team of shop riders over the years. Mathieu Crepel, Anne-Flore Marxer, Marc Swoboda, Henrik Harlaut, Kelly Sildaru, Luca Tribondeau and Philipp Schuster are only a few of the big stars that make up the snowboard, freeski and skate team.

To make sure that Blue Tomato stays in close connection with thier customers, they make sure to be a part of the biggest snowboard, freeski, skate and surf events in Europe throughout the year., Pleasure Jam, iF3, TTR, and FWT are only some of the many events Blue Tomato frequents. On the same level Blue Tomato currently sponsor five snowparks in Europe; Snowpark Stuhleck, Kingspark Hochkönig, Snowpark Kitzsteinhorn, Superpark Dachstein and Superpark Planai.

In the summer of 2012, Blue Tomato was acquired by US action sports retailer Zumiez. Zumiez have over 500 brick and mortar stores in the continental US and Canada, with new locations being added continuously. The companies will together set out to reach a global market of enthusiastic customers, and attempt to set the tone for action sports and lifestyle retailers on a global level. There are major similarities between Blue Tomato and Zumiez looking at product strategy, business philosophy, as well as cultural values, which will aid in creating immediate synergies. Zumiez shares Blue Tomato’s values in the respect of competition and fun, as well as in actively supporting the scene and trying to give back. Both companies look forward to an exciting future together.

Up until recently Blue Tomato has had a strong focus on the online part of their business, with a few ground stores covering the Austrian market. The store in Schaldming was extended in 2006, with the shop in Graz opening the same year. In 2010 Blue Tomato added a flagship store in Vienna with over 1000 m2. Since the merger with Zumiez, Blue Tomato have opened 5 new stores in Germany; Munich, Rosenheim, Hamburg and Stuttgart being the current German gems. In fall 2013 another spacious store will open in Innsbruck. Blue Tomato look forward to an exciting and bright future together with Zumiez.
